Enables many compounds to be analyzed without derivatization. Macherey-Nagel™ LIPODEX™ E Capillary Columns for GC are phases with eight γ-cyclodextrin glucose units for enantiomer separation in gas chromatography. This lipophilic phase with long nonpolar ligants is a chemically non-bonded phase.

A major advantage of LIPODEX columns are that many compounds can be analyzed without derivatization. However, for certain substances, enantioselectivity can be favorably influenced by formation of derivatives. Regioselective alkylation and/or acylation of the hydroxyl groups leads to lipophilic phases with varying enantioselectivity, which are well suited for GC enantiomer analyses.

It is not possible to make a general prediction about which LIPODEX™ phase could solve a given separation task. Even for compounds with small structural differences or within homologous series, the enantiodifferentiation can be quite different.

  • Base material: cyclic oligosaccharides consisting of eight γ-cyclodextrin glucose units bonded through α-1,4-linkages
  • octakis-(2,6-di-O-pentyl-3-O-butyryl)-γ-cyclodextrin
  • Ligands: R2=R6=pentyl, R3=butyryl; n=3
  • Recommended for α-amino acids, α- and β-hydroxycarboxylic acid esters, alcohols (TFA), diols (TFA), ketones, pheromones (cyclic acetals), amines, alkyl halides, lactones
