Description

Cefotaxime Sodium Salt is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.

Cefotaxime, as a cephalosporin, exerts its antibacterial effects by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It does this by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting the final step of peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. This interference leads to structural instability and eventual lysis of the bacterial cell.

Cefotaxime sodium salt is frequently used as a selective agent in culture media to isolate bacteria that are sensitive to this antibiotic. Its inclusion in culture medium allows for the specific growth of bacteria lacking resistance to cefotaxime.
